15 Useful Tips for Effective Web Design

A check list for noob web designers as well as for customers when evaluating ordered website.

Designing an effective website is important for a good end user experience. The following 15 tips will help you design an effective website:
1. Design your website to load fast. Ideally, the website should take less than 15 seconds to load.
2. Have clear navigation on the site. The visitor should be able to identify the topics he is looking for easily through navigation menus and links.
3. Optimize your website for different monitor resolutions. Test the site on computers with 620 x 480 resolution up to 1024 x 768.
4. The website should be compatible with different browser versions. Check that the site design appears optimally in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, and other browsers.
5. Use readable and professional fonts. Use the stand sans serif fonts. Avoid using Comic Sans and other fancy fonts that may not be available on the user's computer.
6. Avoid using too many images and flash. This may slow down the website's loading time. Always make sure that you choose the best hosting service to make sure that your site will load your files as fast as it should. Moreover, search engines cannot read flash objects and this may make your website hard to be found on search engine results.
7. Ensure all the links are working and leading to the right pages. Any broken links should be fixed. If you have a large website, allow users to report broken links through a dedicated email address.
8. Use white space efficiently. Avoid cluttering too much content on the web pages. White spaces make it easier for the user to read the content.
9. If you are targeting a specific country, it is better to use that county's domain name extension. For example, a UK website will be easily recognized with a .co.uk extension rather than a .com one. Top level domains like .com, .net and .org are universal.
10. Choose the type of web hosting that will work for your website. If you are selling online and would like SSL installed, you will need a dedicated server rather than a shared one. Compare prices from different website hosting companies to get the best rate.
11. Your content should provide the user with what he is looking for. Your articles should be well written and provide adequate information about your company, product or service.
12. Use color wisely. Your company or target market will determine what colors you should use. Corporate companies tend to use a maximum of 3 corporate colors in their websites. If you are targeting a youthful audience, a flashy colorful website may work.
13. Optimize your website for search engines. Use both on page and off page optimization techniques to get to the top of search engines. Use of meta tags, H1 tags, keywords, and alt tags is important.
14. Consider the end user experience when designing the website. Avoid making a website that is complicated to use. If you have a shopping cart, the shopping and checkout process should be easy and fast.
15. Put your company's logo on your website. This will instantly identify the company on the Internet.
Keep the above tips in mind when designing your website.

Katy, thanks for you guest post ! Speaking about the website load time there's a cool tool from Google to check that. Only 0.10% of our visitors use screens with a resolution of 640x480 px so I'd say you should optimize your web design layouts for more common resolutions like 1280x1024 . Anyways you can also look up in Google Analytics what monitors your visitors use to view your content and make the adjustments. CSS tricks will make the job easy =) Here's browser display statistics from W3Schools As for on-page optimization the most important factor is the HTML title of the page. Also make sure that the targeted keyword is mentioned in the content.
